Aditi Shankardass: A second opinion on learning disorders

Developmental disorders in children are typically diagnosed by observing behavior, but Dr. Aditi Shankardass knew that we should be looking directly at their brains. She explains how a remarkable EEG device has revealed mistaken diagnoses and transformed children's lives.

In this TED talk, she reports almost 50% of the children previously diagnosed with autism are found to be suffering from some degree of brain seizure activity that is undetectable to the eye.

Dr. Shankardass is a clinical neuroscientist who has trained in neurophysiology, neroanatomy and neuropsychology. She has worked in clinical resarch and clinical diagnosis of children with learning disorders. At present she is the head of the Neurophysiology Clinic at Bright Minds Institute and the EEG Lab of the Communicative Disorders Depatment at Calfornia State University.

Shankardass had devoted herself to the advocacy and use of the EEG (Electroencephalography) technology to record and analyze the brain activity in real time, producing an accurate diagnoses for children with developmental disorders. She actively reaches out to the public to increase understanding of brain disorders. She is a board member of the Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation, a consultant for BBC Science Line and author of Dyslexia and the Brain which is to be released soon.
